Zero-Click Search 2026: Is a Blog Still Worth It?

When a Google search shows an AI summary, people click a traditional result 8% of the time. When it doesn't, they click 15% of the time. That single comparison, from a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 real searches by 900 US adults, is the cleanest evidence we have that the informational blog post lost roughly half its click-through the moment an answer box appeared above it.

It does not mean the blog post lost its purpose. It means the purpose moved. A blog used to be a net you cast for traffic. In 2026 it is closer to a supply chain: the thing that answer layers quote, and the thing a half-convinced buyer opens to check whether the answer was true. Both of those jobs still convert. Neither of them shows up cleanly in a sessions graph.

Here's what the data actually says, what to write differently, and what to put on the dashboard once "traffic" stops being the honest measure.

Fewer than one in three searches still sends a click

Start with the number, and start with its scope — because the scope is where most zero-click commentary goes wrong.

SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026. That's up from 60.45% in 2024, about 49% in 2019, and roughly 45% in 2016. Over the 2024→2026 window, clicks per search fell 22.9%. Fewer than one in three searches now sends a visitor to the open web.

The caveats matter. This is a panel estimate, not a Google-reported census: it excludes searches made inside the Google mobile app, where zero-click is likely higher, and models some ratios from third-party benchmarks. Directionally it's the strongest measurement available. Precisely, it's an estimate.

You will also see numbers in the 75–83% range, and they're real — they just describe narrower slices:

  • 83% of searches end without a click when an AI Overview is present, according to Bain & Company's Generative AI Consumer Survey, which also found about 60% of searches overall end without the user progressing to another site.
  • On desktop specifically, Similarweb's 2026 read puts the external click rate at 20.4% — so roughly four in five desktop searches go nowhere else.

One more caveat rarely gets said out loud: "zero-click" has always included searches nobody intended to click. Weather, unit conversions, spelling. Those were zero-click in 2016 too. The interesting subset is informational queries where a click used to happen — which is why Pew's 8%-versus-15% comparison is better evidence than any headline percentage. Pew also found only about 1% of visits produced a click on a link inside the AI summary, and that sessions ended outright after 26% of AI-summary searches versus 16% of searches without one.

So the answer box is not stealing every click. It is absorbing the specific clicks that used to land on explainer posts.

What ended was the traffic-capture blog

The clearest account comes from a company that built one of the largest content operations in software marketing. HubSpot CMO Kipp Bodnar wrote publicly about the decline: "traffic has indeed fallen for many of our informational keywords" while "performance for transactional keywords is as strong as ever." He notes that "AI Overviews and no-click searches have cannibalized traditional informational search traffic across the board", that HubSpot's pivot away from broad informational content began as far back as early 2020, and that investment moved toward YouTube, podcasts and social. His closing line is the one to keep: "The point was never to maximize page views."

Publishers saw the same curve, harder. The Reuters Institute's 2026 trends report — a survey of 280 media leaders across 51 countries, with traffic figures from Chartbeat — found Google Search referrals to publishers down 33% globally and 38% in the US in the year to November 2025, Google Discover down 21%, and all external referrals down 24%. Those leaders expect a further 43% average decline over three years, with about a fifth expecting losses above 75%.

And AI referrals do not backfill it. Across 1,000 tracked domains, Digiday reported search referrals falling from 12 billion global visits in June 2024 to 11.2 billion in June 2025 — an 800-million-visit hole — while AI referral traffic to news and media sites moved from 35.3 million to 35.9 million visits over May–June 2025. The orders of magnitude aren't close.

But losing sessions is not the same as losing sites. Cyrus Shepard's Zyppy study of 400+ winning and losing sites across twelve months of traffic data found five traits that separated them. Sites with zero of the traits won 13.5% of the time; sites with four won 68.1%, and with five, 69.7%. The traits, by correlation strength: offers a product or service (0.391), lets you complete a task (0.381), owns proprietary assets (0.357), tight topical focus (0.250), strong brand (0.206).

Every one of those traits describes a business that publishes, rather than a publisher that monetises pageviews. If you're a founder with a product and a blog, you're on the favourable side of that data — provided you stop writing like a traffic-capture site.

The new job: being the source the answer is built from

Here's the mechanic that changes what a good post looks like.

Google's AI Mode doesn't retrieve your page and paraphrase it. It fans a single query out into many synthetic sub-queries, builds a per-query "custom corpus," and selects passages. iPullRank's patent-based analysis names the specific filings behind this — Query Response from a Custom Corpus (US20240362093A1) and Text Ranking with Pairwise Ranking Prompting (US20250124067A1) — and Mike King's summary is worth memorising: "In classic IR, your content comes out the same way it goes in. In generative IR, your content is manipulated and you don't know how or if it will appear."

Google's own documentation confirms the fan-out and adds a claim many people missed: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."

Two consequences follow.

First, ranking still buys most of your citation odds. Ahrefs analysed 1.9 million citations across 1 million AI Overviews and found 76.1% of cited pages also rank in the top 10, with a median organic position of #2 for the first-cited URL. But 14.4% of cited pages don't rank in the top 100 at all. As Ahrefs' Si Quan Ong put it: "It's true that if you rank #1 in the SERPs, you're more likely to be cited in an AI Overview than if you were ranked lower. But that chance is a coin flip at best."

Second, being cited is worth real clicks, not just ego. Seer Interactive tracked 3,119 informational and educational search terms across 42 organisations and 25.1 million organic impressions from June 2024 through September 2025. When an AI Overview is present, brands cited in it saw 0.70% organic CTR versus 0.52% for brands not cited: "you get 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks compared to when you are not cited at all." Seer notes the CTRs are monthly averages with substantial per-query variance, and that the query set is deliberately the most AIO-exposed slice.

Both CTRs are small. The ratio is the point: being quoted turns an impression into a click about a third more often than being left out does.

One finding complicates the "just publish more posts" reflex. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, versus 0.218 for backlinks — off-site mentions correlating about three times more strongly than links do. The authors are careful and so should we be: they describe the whole range as "moderate to very weak" and say plainly that "correlation ≠ causation." Still, citation looks partly like a distribution outcome, not purely a writing-style one. Publishing is necessary; it isn't sufficient.

The second job: the verification visit

This is the part almost every zero-click article skips, and it may be the most commercially important thing in the whole story.

Buyers now start in the answer layer. G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software buyers globally in March 2026 and found 51% now start research with AI chatbots more often than with Google, up from 29% in April 2025; 69% chose a different vendor than they'd planned after chatbot guidance; 33% bought from a vendor they hadn't previously heard of; and 85% view a vendor more favourably when a chatbot mentions it. G2's Chief Innovation Officer Tim Sanders calls it compression: "AI chatbots are compressing it into a single answer. Buyers have moved from reference to inference."

But they don't stop there. Semrush surveyed US B2B professionals in March–April 2026 and found that after an AI recommendation, 71% still visit the vendor's website and 63% search for the company on Google. What makes a vendor stand out inside an AI answer isn't fame — only 7% notice a brand on name recognition alone — it's precise use-case alignment, cited by 53%. The top frustrations with AI recommendations were genericness (33%) and lack of depth (28%).

So the journey is: the answer box shortlists you, then the visitor arrives at your site to verify. That visitor is not a top-of-funnel reader. They already have a recommendation in hand and they're checking whether it survives contact with your actual pages.

Which reframes the traffic decline. Ahrefs published its own first-party numbers: in a 30-day window, AI search accounted for 0.5% of traffic but 12.1% of signups — roughly 23x the conversion rate of traditional organic — with lower bounce rates and 50% more pages per session, even though AI-search users click links about 75% less often overall. Treat that multiple as plausible and self-reported rather than established; the author, Ryan Law, says as much, and adds a warning worth pinning up: "These CTRs are probably the highest they'll ever be as the novelty of this format wears off."

The strategic read doesn't depend on the exact multiple. Fewer visitors, arriving later in the decision, with a shortlist already formed, means your blog's job is no longer to introduce the category. It's to be quotable enough to make the shortlist, and specific enough to survive the verification visit.

What to measure when clicks stop being the point

The dashboard is the last thing most teams change, and the first thing that should change.

You now have a first-party AI visibility metric. On 3 June 2026, Google launched Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console, covering impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features. Note what's missing: no clicks, no CTR, no query data, and the initial rollout covered only a subset of UK properties. Google's position is that "We're continuing to work with website owners to understand what insights will be most helpful... and we'll introduce additional metrics over time."

Impressions and clicks have come apart. Ahrefs' study of 300,000 keywords across 55.8 million AI Overviews found the correlation between impressions and clicks flipped from +0.425 to −0.352 in six months, with AI Overview presence associated with a 34.5% CTR reduction. If your reporting still treats impressions as a leading indicator of sessions, it will read as failure while things are working.

Practical substitutions, in rough order of usefulness:

  1. Citation share in your own category. Run the twenty prompts a buyer would actually type and record who gets named. It's manual and it's the closest thing to a rank-tracking equivalent right now.
  2. Branded search volume and direct traffic. If the answer layer is doing its job, demand shows up as people looking for you rather than for your topic.
  3. Assisted and last-touch conversions from small channels. A channel at 0.5% of traffic can be your best channel. Sessions-weighted dashboards hide that by design.
  4. Verification-visit behaviour. Pages per session, time on the pages a shortlisted buyer would check (pricing, comparisons, docs), and conversion rate from those pages.
  5. AI Overview impressions in Search Console, understood as a visibility proxy — not as traffic.

And hold referral volume loosely, because it isn't yours to control. When ChatGPT's 7 May 2026 update began surfacing brand names as prominent clickable callouts, total referrals rose 157.7% week-on-week and homepage referrals rose 354.7% — with pages per visit up from 3.8 to 4.7. Nobody's content changed. An interface decision changed. The same lever can be pulled the other way next quarter. Build for citation; treat clicks as a bonus.

How to write a post that can be cited

None of this is exotic. It's mostly a reallocation of effort from headline-chasing to passage quality.

Answer in the first third. Profound analysed roughly 730,000 US English ChatGPT conversations from October to December 2025 and found only about 18% trigger a web search at all, and the first turn is 2.5x more likely to produce citations than turn 10. Citation distribution is highly unequal (Gini around 0.8), yet the top 10 domains account for only 12% of all citations — more room for ordinary sites than the concentration suggests. A buried conclusion is an uncited conclusion.

Write self-contained sections, one per sub-question. Since retrieval happens at passage level against a fanned-out set of sub-queries, a section that fully answers one narrow question can be pulled even when the page isn't the best page on the topic overall. Sections that only make sense after reading the previous three don't travel.

Keep ranking. It remains the single biggest input, at 76.1% of citations also sitting in the top 10.

Publish things that can only be quoted from you. Original numbers, first-party benchmarks, a named methodology, a worked example with real inputs. An answer engine assembling a response needs specifics it can attribute; a paraphrase of the same five sources everyone else used gives it nothing to reach for.

Write the comparison and use-case pages, not just the definitions. Fifty-three percent of B2B buyers say vendors stand out through precise use-case alignment, and the top complaints about AI recommendations are genericness and shallowness. Those pages are also the ones a verification visitor opens.

Refresh, but don't fetishise freshness. Across 16.975 million cited URLs on seven surfaces, Ahrefs found cited pages are about 25.7% fresher than the organic top 10 — but their average age is still 2.9 years, and Google's AI Overviews actually cite slightly older pages than organic SERPs do (1,432 days versus 1,416). Update what's decayed; don't re-date everything on a schedule.

Skip llms.txt for now. Ahrefs checked 137,210 domains in May 2026: 28% publish an llms.txt file, and 97% of those files received zero requests in the period — while only 19.5% of the requests that did arrive came from AI tools at all, most being SEO audit crawlers. Google's documentation says the same thing in plainer words: you don't need new machine-readable files.

Make the facts survive checking. This is the one that quietly gates everything else. If a passage contains a number, an answer engine may lift it; if a reader arrives to verify and finds a dead citation, you've failed the verification visit at the moment it mattered. The objections, taken seriously

A post like this should state the strongest arguments against itself.

Google disputes the premise. In August 2025, VP and Head of Search Liz Reid wrote that "Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year," and that Google is "sending slightly more quality clicks to websites than a year ago" — a quality click being one where the user doesn't quickly bounce back. The post publishes no supporting data, which is why practitioners discount it, but it's Google's stated position.

The measurements disagree with each other. BrightEdge's weekly analysis found 96.8% of cited domains unchanged week-over-week in early February 2026, noting that "AI search is consolidating, not redistributing." Writesonic, analysing 161,286 prompts across four engines in May–June 2026, found only 3.8% of sources were cited by all four engines, with 72–73% of cited domains appearing on exactly one platform. Both can be true — they measure stability over time versus agreement across engines. Practically: your position on one engine tells you little about another.

Most AI-written content doesn't get surfaced at all. Graphite classified 43,000 randomly sampled English articles and found AI-generated articles overtook human-written ones by volume around November 2024 — yet "largely do not appear in Google and ChatGPT". That's the strongest objection to any automated publishing workflow, and the honest answer isn't "ours is different." It's the policy line: Google's guidance defines scaled content abuse as "many pages generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users," listing generative AI used "to generate many pages without adding value" as one example. The production method is explicitly not the test — value is. We read that policy closely in what Google's scaled content abuse policy really bans.

You can now opt out — sort of. On 3 June 2026, the UK Competition and Markets Authority, having designated Google with Strategic Market Status in general search, imposed a conduct requirement letting publishers opt out of having their content power AI Overviews and AI Mode without losing traditional search visibility, opt out of fine-tuning use, and requiring clearer attribution with links. CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell: "With features like AI Overviews rapidly reshaping online search, it is crucial that content publishers have appropriate bargaining power." For a publisher whose product is the page view, that lever matters. For a business that blogs to be found, opting out means being absent from the layer where buyers now begin.

And be sceptical of tidy GEO tactics. Widely repeated "add statistics, lift visibility 41%" style figures trace back to a 2023 academic paper that reported up to 40% visibility improvement on its own benchmark and found effectiveness varies by domain. Keep the "up to," and be wary of vendor case studies with no visible methodology.

Citation share on the prompts your buyers actually type; branded search volume and direct traffic; conversions from small high-intent channels; and AI Overview impressions from Search Console's generative AI reports — read as a visibility proxy, since they carry no click or CTR data.

So what is a blog for in 2026?

Three things, in this order.

It's the artefact your niche's answer layer quotes. Passage-level retrieval means a single well-built section can be pulled into an answer read by someone who will never see your homepage — and citation demonstrably beats absence, both in clicks and in how buyers regard you afterwards.

It's the page a shortlisted buyer opens to check. Seven in ten still visit the vendor site after an AI recommendation. What they find there — specific use cases, real numbers, links that resolve — decides whether the recommendation holds.

And it's the only asset in this entire story you actually own. Rankings move, referral volumes triple or halve on someone else's product decision, and regulators redraw the rules mid-quarter. Your archive stays yours.
